Take the Pledge Against Mass Surveillance

Dear Mayor Ishii and Berkeley City Council,
I saw the news about the 7 candidates running for City Council who signed the Anti Mass Surveillance Pledge in Berkeley (1). In it these candidates promise that if they are elected, they will not vote to approve, renew, expand, or otherwise allow any mass surveillance system in Berkeley, and will work to remove the existing network of 52 Flock ALPRs. A Daily Cal article reported that these 7 candidates also sent you all a letter explaining their position (2) and asking you to hold off on the upcoming lame duck RFP vote.
There is no shortage of readily accessible information about the outsize risks of installing always-recording AI-powered surveillance technologies, supplied by profit-driven corporations, with our data held in data centers under dubious levels of security, during a time of expanding federal authoritarianism and diminishing civil liberties.
It would mean a lot to the residents of Berkeley to see their elected officials address the well established dangers of mass surveillance. I urge you to take a public stance on this election-defining issue and sign the Anti Mass Surveillance Pledge in Berkeley (3).
With Gratitude,
[YOUR NAME]
